Community schools

Student training is an avenue of growth for Ty Banc Canal Group and the Neath Canal Communities.

The training is all-inclusive, ranging from primary school to University student volunteers.

During the Summer 2021, Llangatwg Community School Year 8s had the opportunity to learn about specially designed canal-specific tools to clear the water of excessive pond weeds instead of the regular litter-picking cleaning sessions.

Alongside, pupils also received nature lessons on wildlife in the local area and how their cleaning contribution would benefit the community. It was successful and satisfactory for the pupils to learn about the biodiversity of the Canal.

“The local young people understand the importance of taking positive action to encourage the biodiversity of the canal and take responsibility for rejuvenating this vital historical asset for the benefit of themselves, the local community, and future generations. It has been a pleasure working alongside these dedicated youngsters and sharing our local knowledge and expertise.”

In addition, local groups joined Ty Banc and Jeremy Miles (Education Minister) in pond dipping, learning, and interacting with the Canal nature. The Children were very excited to discover aquatic life lurking below the murky waters such as tadpoles, toads, small fishes and pond skaters along with getting to know local flora which pales against the star catch of the day.

To help collaborate and continue to work with children and young people, Ty Banc Canal Group offers seasonal activity packs and events engaging with locals and establishing future partnerships with schools.

These activity packs are a stepping stone into bringing the community with nature as the books follow the QR Path, enabling children to learn about plants and animals they have discovered!
