Community groups

Working and coexisting as a community creates a cohesive network of community groups that is the fabric of villages and towns along the canals in the Neath Valley.

Together, we will enhance and protect the Neath Valley’s canal environment for everyone to enjoy. Our journey began in 2019 with a series of canal clean-up events, which highlighted the untapped potential of community spirit to improve where we live.

In 2021, funded by the Welsh government’s Coronavirus Recovery Grant for Volunteering, we partnered with Cardiff University to draw up Ty Banc’s approach to volunteering embedded 7 goals of the Wellbeing for Future Generation Act 2015

Communication is key, and we stay connected through social media, keeping everyone informed about our work to protect and enhance the biodiversity along our canals.

These waterways, once the main transport routes, now serve as a link between all of us in the Neath Valley, represented by the various groups that come together in cooperation.

You can learn more about our collective efforts on Tŷ Banc’s Facebook page. Tŷ Banc started community initiatives that promote the Welsh Language, like the Welsh Wednesday Group, and collaborated with Cardiff University to create interactive educational experiences along the canal.

The collective result is the plaques with QR codes and quizzes for children, making learning about heritage and biodiversity a fun and engaging experience on canal walks.

We invite you to join us as we work together to nurture our community and celebrate our shared history.
