About us

Welcome to the Ty Banc Canal Group.

We aim to bring communities together through our shared love for the canal.

Together, we will enhance and protect the Neath Valley’s canal environment for everyone to enjoy. Our journey began in 2019 with a series of canal clean-up events, which highlighted the untapped potential of community spirit to improve where we live.

In 2021, funded by the Welsh government’s Coronavirus Recovery Grant for Volunteering, we partnered with Cardiff University to draw up Ty Banc’s approach to volunteering embedded 7 goals of the Wellbeing for Future Generation Act 2015

This collaboration deepened our understanding of the canal’s condition and the specific needs of the Neath Valley Community. In 2023, we leased the field next to Resolven Basin and hosted our very first Canal Festival. The festival was a celebration of heritage, art, and music, and it showcased the incredible local talent in our community.

We focus on:

  1. Caring for our living environment with sensitivity to biodiversity and heritage.
  2. Celebrating the history and culture of the canal through events and exhibitions.
  3. Collaborating with institutions and students to volunteer and regenerate the canal.

We strive for harmony between the historic environment and biodiversity. Our vision is to rejuvenate the Neath Valley through a navigable canal system that links the Swansea, Neath, and Tenant Canals to Swansea Bay, thereby revitalising the community centred around the canals.
